Wildlife photographer Christian Ziegler captured an unusual sight near the LuiKotale site in the DRC: a young male bonobo gently cradling a tiny mongoose pup. The tender interaction lasted over an hour before the ape released the pup unharmed, earning accolades at the Wildlife Photographer of the Year awards.
While it looks like a heartwarming moment of interspecies empathy, the reality is more complex. Despite their peaceful reputation, bonobos actively hunt small mammals, including mongooses. Dr. Barbara Fruth suggests that sated bonobos sometimes keep live prey as "pets" or "toys."
Primatologists note that holding live animals can be socially motivated, used as an accessory to attract grooming and boost social status. Sadly, this particular pup may have even been orphaned during a successful hunt, making the tender image far less sweet than it appears.
