UK Activist Faces Prison for Cleaning Trash From Local River Without Permit

UK barrister and environmental activist Paul Powlesland is under investigation after leading a volunteer river cleanup with the River Roding Trust. Over a 10-day period, the group removed roughly 200 bags of trash, silt, weeds, and branches from Alders Brook, a tributary flowing through Essex and East London. 

Powlesland organized the initiative after spending years asking the Environment Agency to address the neglected waterway. Since the cleanup, local wildlife has already begun returning to the area. 

Instead of receiving gratitude, Powlesland received a letter from the Environment Agency stating the unpermitted work may have breached the Environmental Permitting Regulations 2016. He now faces up to two years in prison. Powlesland highlighted the immense irony, questioning why volunteers are targeted while major polluters go unpunished.
