The initiative has quickly gained traction nationwide, with more than 50 couples choosing to exchange vows in the presence of their dogs or cats since its inception. A recent ceremony in Quito perfectly captured the emotional core of the program, featuring newlyweds Diana Tupiza and Andres Alquinga alongside their Pekingese, Luna, who served as their official witness while wearing a custom dress. While Luna’s ink-stamped paw print carries no legal weight under the country’s framework, the gesture held profound sentimental value for the couple, symbolizing the integral role their animal companions play in their lives.
To preserve the legal integrity of the union while honoring the couple's bond, the Civil Registry issues a separate, secondary document clearly labeled "Symbolic Marriage Certificate." This document includes a designated, formalized box specifically marked for the "paw print of your furry friend." By standardizing this option across regional offices, Ecuador positions itself as a progressive legal benchmark in Latin America, acknowledging that the definition of a supportive family unit continues to evolve.
