A stunningly rare golden tiger has been captured on camera in India's Kaziranga National Park, located in Assam. This animal is not a new species, but rather an incredibly unique color variant of the Bengal Tiger caused by a distinct genetic mutation. First documented in Kaziranga, only a handful of these majestic big cats have ever been seen in the wild.
The striking golden coat and faded stripes are the result of a recessive gene expression, often triggered by inbreeding within isolated populations facing shrinking natural habitats. Because of this, researchers warn that the appearance of a golden tiger is actually a stark indicator of a limited and vulnerable wild gene pool.
