Photographer Captures Mount Etna Erupting into a Fiery Phoenix

Mount Etna recently produced a jaw-dropping sight when a volcanic eruption formed the distinct shape of a flaming phoenix in the sky. The viral photo is entirely real, captured perfectly by landscape photographer Davide Zagami without any digital manipulation.

The dramatic phenomenon occurred during an explosive phase of Europe's most active volcano. A central column of volcanic gas formed the phoenix’s body, while expanding ash clouds spread outward to create massive wings. The intense glow of molten lava illuminated the formation from below, completing the mythical illusion. This striking effect is an example of pareidolia—the human brain's tendency to find familiar shapes in random patterns. Shaped by fleeting thermal updrafts and specific wind currents, the phoenix was visible only from the photographer's exact angle.

Located on Sicily's east coast, the 500,000-year-old stratovolcano created a fitting symbol of rebirth and natural resilience.
