Oscar-winning Irish actress Brenda Fricker has passed away peacefully at the age of 81 following a period of ill health. Over a career spanning six decades, the Dublin-born star became beloved globally for two iconic roles: the fiercely devoted mother in My Left Foot alongside Daniel Day-Lewis, and the lonely, kind-hearted Pigeon Lady who befriends Kevin McCallister in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.
Her brilliant performance in My Left Foot earned her the 1990 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, making her the first Irish woman to win an acting Oscar. Fricker later called the win a double-edged sword that led to typecasting, though she remained immensely respected. Long before Hollywood, she was a household name as nurse Megan Roach on the BBC medical drama Casualty.
