In early July 2026, Marven Linoy, a young farmer from the indigenous Lumad community in Malaybalay City, Bukidnon, Philippines, saved an endangered Philippine eagle from a monkey attack. While picking passion fruit, Linoy investigated a loud noise in the bushes and found a troop of monkeys swarming the grounded bird.
Linoy bravely scared the monkeys away by barking like a dog. To calm the eagle, he covered its eyes with leaves, wrapped it in his jacket, and waited for assistance. The eagle was transferred to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for medical care. According to the Philippine Eagle Foundation, the bird was in critical condition due to severe dehydration and a maggot infestation but has since stabilized.
Linoy’s quick thinking and courage highlight the ongoing threats endangered species face as human activity encroaches on their habitats, earning him widespread respect.
