New Rules Combat the Objectification of Female Athletes in Sports Broadcasting

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and European Athletics have introduced new guidelines to prevent the objectification of female athletes. The 23-page "Raising the Bar" document urges broadcasters to focus on technical ability and performance rather than resorting to exploitative camera angles or unnecessary slow-motion replays.

The guidelines explicitly condemn lingering body shots, low camera angles, and voyeuristic slow-motion footage across events like high jump, pole vault, and running. Instead, directors are encouraged to use wider angles that highlight athletic technique. Glen Killane of EBU Sports noted that selective camera choices remain an ongoing industry issue.

British Olympic pole vaulter Holly Bradshaw backed the initiative, sharing that athletes often worry more about compromising angles than competing, having personally suffered social media abuse from inappropriate slow-motion clips.
