The largest male great white shark ever tagged in the Atlantic Ocean has reemerged near North Carolina's Outer Banks. Measuring 13 feet 9 inches long and weighing a staggering 1,653 pounds, the massive predator is officially named "Contender."
The non-profit research group OCEARCH originally tagged the shark in January 2025. Contender's tracking device pinged on Thursday, July 16, revealing his location near the popular tourist barrier islands. Scientists note that this visit aligns perfectly with the shark's annual migration up the East Coast toward Cape Cod and Atlantic Canada for the warmer months. The Outer Banks region acts as a hotspot, offering ideal water temperatures and abundant prey like large fish and grey seals.
The tag will transmit data for five years whenever it clears the surface, providing founder Chris Fischer and his team crucial insights into mature male shark behaviors.
