KFC China Launches Viral Whole Watermelon and Roasted Chicken Summer Combo

KFC has launched an unusual seasonal bundle across China, pairing a whole "Te Xiao Feng" miniature watermelon with a fragrant, paper-wrapped roasted chicken. Debuting across more than 8,000 stores, the combination is priced at just 34.9 yuan (around $5.15 USD), with the fresh fruit included at no extra charge. A standalone small watermelon is also available in Shanghai for $2.50.

The promotion aligns with Sanfu, the hottest period of summer when eating watermelon is a traditional way to cool down and hydrate. The deal proved wildly popular, selling out 80,000 units almost instantly.

However, the marketing campaign sparked a very different reaction abroad. In the United States, pairing chicken with watermelon carries a painful history tied directly to anti-Black racist tropes, causing the localized Chinese promotion to clash sharply with global perceptions.
