Before he ever put on the Spider-Man suit, Tobey Maguire wanted to be a chef

Following in the footsteps of his father Vincent, who worked as a cook. As a sixth grader, he planned to enroll in a home economics class to start down that path. That is when his mother Wendy stepped in with an offer he could not refuse, giving him 100 dollars to take a drama class instead. He accepted, and that single decision quietly redirected the entire course of his life.

The most charming part comes from Maguire himself. In a 2000 interview with the Tampa Bay Times, he reflected on that moment, noting that 100 dollars was a lot of money to both him and his mother at the time. He also admitted he never actually paid her back directly for it, though he has helped her out plenty since.

Considering he went on to earn 4 million dollars for the first Spider-Man, then 17.5 million plus a cut of the box office for Spider-Man 2, that original 100 dollars turned into one of the most profitable bets any parent has ever made.
