A New Beetle Genus Was Named After One Piece's Luffy

A Danish research team officially named a new genus of rove beetles "Luffy," published in ZooKeys, in honor of the One Piece protagonist Monkey D. Luffy. The name stems from the beetles' unusually long, slender mandibles, antennae, and palps, which reminded scientists of Luffy's iconic rubber-stretching abilities. The new genus includes two distinct species. The first, Luffy schillhammeri, was discovered in Yunnan Province, China, and honors beetle researcher Dr. Harald Schillhammer. The second species, Luffy nika, found in Louang Namtha, Laos, references Luffy's Gear 5 "Nika" form. Mirroring the anime character's smoke-shrouded, white-haired appearance, this beetle uniquely features striking white, band-like hairs across its body.
