A black Labrador named Tokyo needed a dramatic mountain rescue on July 4 after falling critically ill on Ben Nevis. Vets believe she ingested cannabis discarded on the trail. Thankfully, Tokyo has since made a full and complete recovery.
During a routine climb up Scotland's 1,345-meter peak, dog trainer Christina Bluhme noticed Tokyo suddenly lose the use of her legs and drift in and out of consciousness. Lochaber Mountain Rescue climbed the peak to assist, carrying the 25 kg dog down on a stretcher—a feat Bluhme noted would have been impossible alone.
Tokyo bounced back the next day. Dogs are incredibly vulnerable to cannabis poisoning because they possess far more cannabinoid receptors than humans. While rarely fatal, it triggers severe side effects. Bluhme has urged hikers to stay highly alert, warning that discarded drugs can unfortunately turn up even on the most beautiful outdoor trails.
